GLO CAF AWARDS 2016: RYAD MAHREZ, AFRICAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR

mahreNo second consecutive trophy for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese winner in 2015 was over shadowed in the Glo CAF Awards 2016 by the Algerian Ryad Mahrez. The Leicester player got 361 votes against 313 for the Borussia Dortmund striker. The Senegalese Sadio Mané finished third with 186 votes.

With 252 votes, Denis Onyango, Ugandan and goalkeeper Mamelodi Sundowns is elected African player of the year playing on the continent. He beat his clubmate and Zimbabwean Khama Billiat (228 votes) and the Zambian Rainford Kalaba (206 votes). Onyango succeeds Tanzanian Mbwana Samatta and becomes the first goalkeeper to win the prize.

Two more trophies for Mamelodi Sundowns. The South African club is the club of the year notably for its victory in the Champions League and its participation in the World cup of the clubs and its manager Pitso Mosimane is sacred better coach.

Special mention to Papa Gassama, the award-winning Gambian referee for the third consecutive time (2014, 2015 and 2016).

Elsewhere, Nigeria returns with 4 trophies. The national female team of the year for its African championship for the eighth time in 10 editions, that of the best young player for the nugget of Arsenal Alex Iwobi and promising talent Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City.


Finally, player Asisat Oshoala, top scorer of the last Women's Afcon is sacred Player of the Year for the second time in its history.
